Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does a postpartum doula do?

What I love about being a postpartum doula is the breadth of support we provide to the entire family during the postpartum period. Below I've listed the a few examples of the type of support you can expect from your doula.

Informational:

  • Postpartum recovery support for both cesarean and vaginal births

  • Breastfeeding support and guidance

  • Breastmilk storage

  • Safe sleep guidance

  • All things baby care - swaddling, diapers, baby wearing, and so much more

  • Referrals to trusted professionals such as IBCLC's, physical therapists and parent groups

Emotional:

  • A safe space to discuss anything, with no judgement

  • A comforting shoulder to cry on

  • Pointing out and celebrating your successes both big and small

  • Trained to recognize signs of postpartum mood disorders

  • Tools and tips for navigating the "baby blues"

Practical:

  • Washing and sanitizing bottles

  • Laundry

  • Changing sheets

  • Light meal prep

  • Sibling care

  • Practical care during overnights looks slightly different, as your doula will stay in the room with your little one. This is due to research showing having someone in the room while baby is sleeping, even if they are sleeping themselves, reduces the risk of SIDS.

What is the difference between a postpartum doula and a night nanny?

A postpartum doula offers a holisitc approach to paostpartum care. They focus on baby and mother, along with the family as a unit, to provide informational, emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. Night nannies focus solely on the baby's needs throughout the night.

How many hours do people usually hire you for?

This really depends on an individuals budget, and what type of support they're looking for. Some clients just want consistent help the first week or two home and others like to have care once or twice a week.

What don't you do?

  • I do not give medical advice, or diagnoses, such as for tongue-tie or postpartum mood disorders. If I believe it could benefit you, or your little one, I will offer referrals to the appropriate professionals.

  • I do not administer treatment for medical conditions. Any follow-up care provided by your physician will be the responsibility of the parents.

  • I do not look after children while the parents are not at home. I do require one or both of the parents to be in the home while I am there.

Do you accept insurance?

I am currently not accepting clients paying via insurance. However, I am currently working towards accepting it in the near future!
